In Hinduism and Buddhism, the palki is traditionally associated with royalty and divinity. As such, palki plays an important role in many festivals and customs including those related to marriage, birth and death.

A wedding doli or palki is a decorated palanquin, which is used for the ceremonial entrance at weddings in India. The palki is the traditional palanquin or litter used to carry a bride between her home and her husband’s house. A doli is usually an ornate box carried by four people, it is made wood with white metal sheet on it. The bride sits inside the box while being carried over to the groom’s house for the ceremony.
